Obesity is a chronic disease, difficult to treat with only diet and exercise. In fact, the last 30 years have shown that these non-surgical methods have failed. Currently, obesity is spread worldwide, with important social effects. Surgery (bariatric) is currently the only way to treat obesity. It consists of interventions on the stomach and / or the small intestine that help patients with extreme obesity to lose weight. These surgeries are an option for those who can’t lose weight by other means or who suffer from serious obesity-related health problems.

The definition and classification of obesity take into consideration the BMI (body mass index / BMI). This index is calculated by dividing the weight (in kilograms) by the square of the height (in meters), defining BMI ranges that indicate obesity.

BMI=G/H²

BMI Status
< 18.5 Underweight
18.5-24.9 Normal weight
25-29.9 Overweight
30-34.9 Obesity
35-39.9 Class II obesity (severe)
40-44.9 Class III obesity (morbid)
45-49.9 Super obesity
>50 Super super obesity

Obesity Surgery

There are several types of interventions and surgeries for obesity. Most often they limit the amount of food that can be consumed. Other procedures also change the way food is digested, altering the absorption of calories and nutrients. Recent studies suggest that surgery can reduce the risk of death for patients with severe obesity. The best results occur when patients resort to surgery as early as possible, at weights that are still easy to manage and have not yet led to serious obesity-related illnesses.

Surgical procedures for the treatment of morbid obesity fall into two categories: restrictive and malabsorption (or a combination of the two). The gastric band and gastric sleeve (stomach reduction) are purely restrictive operations. The gastric bypass is also a restrictive operation, but with an important component of malabsorption.
